August 2026: exhibition workshops

Between Object and Place, Terrace Greenhouse

As part of my solo exhibition Between Place and Object at Terrace Greenhouse, I will be running a series of workshops:

Five Ways To Transform Your Painting Practice.

Have you ever felt like you're working hard but your paintings still aren't saying what you want them to?

This August I'm teaching a series of five workshops designed to help artists build stronger paintings through observation, colour and design.

Rather than focusing on copying what you see, we'll explore how to simplify complex subjects, mix cleaner colour, understand light and create paintings with greater confidence and impact.

Each workshop focuses on a different aspect of the painting process, so you can choose one that speaks to you or combine several to build a deeper understanding.

These workshops are designed to be accessible with paint provided to take the pressure off getting the right colours or brands.

Suitable for all levels.

Tuesday 18th August 10-4

1: Simplify the landscape with mixed media

A composition starts with a story. Whether you are working from a reference image or plein air, this workshop will teach you how to eliminate detail and create a dynamic painting.

We will cover basic compositional formulas to create balance and harmony. From there, we will look for the Big Shapes by working with thumbnail sketches to quickly determine what will be visually pleasing.

We will look at how to simplify objects with gestural mark making then introduce a limited palette to create a painting that is expressive and loose.

Mixed media materials supplied, participants to bring visual diaries and paper.

$150 per workshop - 10% off for early bird bookings!

2: Moody Landscapes in Acrylic

Learn how a single reference can offer multiple painting opportunities. Using a palette knife and a limited palette, learn to paint dramatic landscapes that are an emotional response rather than a literal interpretation on a variety of surfaces. This workshop will explore a non-traditional way of working with acrylic paint that is suitable for large scale work or sketchbooks.

Paint materials and two canvases supplied, participants to bring visual diaries and paper.

3: Colour Theory Made Fun

Don’t understand warm and cool colours? Confused about neutrals? Making mud instead of luminous paintings?

Give yourself the time and space to slow down in this fun class where we take the guess work out of why some things work while others don’t with practical tips that you can easily recreate. Learn about value and why sometimes it is important - and other times, colour is the goal. Create a set of colour charts to use as references in your own practise.

We will work in oils, but these strategies apply to all mediums.

Materials provided.

4: Lemons - Understanding mixing yellows

Paint a beautiful still life on a small canvas while learning about the subtle shifts of warm and cool colours, reflected light and clean shadows with a focus on mixing shades of yellow.

Learn about the power of complementary colours and to use neutrals to your advantage.

Paint materials and a 15x15cm canvas supplied, participants to bring visual diaries and paper.

5. Painting White

Painting white successfully means using lots of colour! Learn how to see reflected light on white through a series of exercises.

Finish the workshop painting a white flower in oils on a small canvas that reads as glowing clean whites and not dull or muddy.

We will look at how to reduce a complex flower into basic shapes that can be built on to allow you to explore representational abstraction or take your painting into realism.

Paint materials and a 15x15cm canvas supplied, participants to bring visual diaries and paper.
